We have roughly three weeks until training camps start, so now is the perfect time for teams to try to sign draft picks, and if they’re so inclined, re-work existing deals with players currently on the roster looking for more coin.
Browns tight end Kellen Winslow qualifies for the latter category, although his employer doesn’t share his urgency. In fact, general manager Phil Savage has said that the organization doesn’t “have a lot of wiggle room right now at this particular time,” which is code for, “yeah, it ain’t happenin’ before the season so quit asking.”
Pro Football Weekly speculates that when the Browns decide to start handing out bonuses, Winslow might not even be first in line. According to a source close to the club, Browns WR Braylon Edwards, who has only two years left on his contract, is in line ahead of TE Kellen Winslow when it comes to getting a new deal. Winslow, whose contract has been the source of offseason speculation, has three years left on his rookie deal. No idea how much truth there is to all this, but it seems plausible enough. Edwards has improved in each of his three NFL seasons and is close to becoming an elite NFL receiver.
