Cleveland Browns News

1. Ownership's biggest concern is a lack of leadership. The problems with Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards were disturbing because it seemed no one in the front office or coaching staff could stop what became a long soap opera. Coach Romeo Crennel might be fired as soon as Monday. GM Phil Savage will probably have to wait a little longer to learn his fate.

2. The first move is expected to be the obvious - what does Bill Cowher want to not just coach the Browns, but establish a winning culture? The Browns don't want Cowher to be a Butch Davis-type, where he is picking every single player and has a novice such as Pete Garcia to help. But Cowher would have a major say in the Football side in addition to coaching the team.

3. Ownership is tired of hearing the team lacks identity, that it appears dysfunctional. They want a leader and a strong voice. It can come from the coach or the GM. But it has to deliver a clear vision for how the team expects to play and win.

4. No NFL team has a clear idea of what Cowher will do. His name is appearing in connection to jobs in Detroit, Kansas City, Washington and possibly the 9-5 Jets. The Browns are expected to try to get a real sense of Cowher's intentions in the next few weeks. They don't want to wait so long on Cowher that they lose out on other possibilities.

5. Mike Holmgren is emerging as an attractive choice, especially as a general manager. It's believed Holmgren is weary of coaching, but has an interest in running a Football operation. Holmgren indicated he planned to take at least one year off.

6. New England GM Scott Pioli is compelling to the Browns and other teams. He brings the sense of leadership, but is he finally ready to leave the NFL's model organization? Pioli worked in Cleveland under Bill Belichick in the early 1990s, and he is good friends with Tribe GM Mark Shapiro and Cavs GM Danny Ferry. The Browns believe Pioli would bring the same sense of stability to any NFL team that Shapiro and Ferry have delivered to their franchises.

7. If Philadelphia has a brain-belch and fires Andy Reid, he would pop up near the top of the Browns' list, probably right behind Cowher. Reid is a former QB coach (Packers) and that would make Cleveland a good spot for him with Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson here.

8. Marty Schottenheimer seems to be on a "B" list, behind the big names of Cowher, Holmgren, Pioli and if someone such as Reid suddenly is available.

9. The Browns want a coach who can develop young players. There is a belief that Savage has made major progress upgrading the roster in his four years. At the very least, there will be new faces on the sidelines.

10. Ownership wants someone with experience either as a coach or GM. The Browns don't want to start over again with a rookie head coach and GM as they did four years ago.
