Anderson gets shot to start over
Browns INSIDER

Three games on the sideline gave deposed starting quarterback Derek Anderson a different perspective of the job.

"It's harder to see what the defense is doing," Anderson said with a faint chuckle.

And that was as bright as his reappearance in front of the media got.

Anderson is back in the saddle as the starting quarterback for the last five games because of Brady Quinn's season-ending finger injury. Nobody knows whether he is auditioning for a new team in 2009 or staking his claim to return as the permanent starter here. Coach Romeo Crennel said Quinn would be the starter in 2009.

Anderson opted not to test free agency last year when he signed a three-year contract at a reported maximum of $26 million. He is due a $5 million roster bonus in March. At the same time, Quinn needs to take 70 percent of the offensive snaps next season to trigger salary escalations that can max out at $20 million - an $11 million boost.

If Anderson's mood was any indication, he knows his future here is uncertain.

"Every opportunity I get, obviously I'm thankful for that," he said. "I'm going to go out and do what we can to win some games."

Asked about next season, Anderson said: "If I'm here, I'm here. If I'm somewhere else, I'm not going to worry about that. I'll deal with that when the time comes."

The domino effect: Quinn's injury elevated Ken Dorsey to the No. 2 job behind Anderson.

Crennel said do-it-all wonder Josh Cribbs would get some time at quarterback during practice this week in case he is needed as an emergency replacement.

The Browns also added quarterback Richard Bartel to the practice squad. Bartel, 6-3 and 233 pounds, had last been on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad. The Cowboys signed Bartel, who was a two-year starter at NCAA Division II Tarleton State, as an undrafted free agent in 2007.

Dungy alert: Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy said the Colts were preparing hard to face Quinn.

"We're going to have go back and look at some games where Anderson played," Dungy said on a conference call. "They do different things, and I think they'll do more with Anderson than they did with Quinn. So we're going to have to adjust. He's a good player obviously, went to the Pro Bowl last year. We've watched the game against the Giants where he was very, very hot. That's kind of what we're looking for."

The eyes have it: Receiver Braylon Edwards doesn't believe his chronic drops are a result of vision problems. He was asked whether he considered LASIK.

"LASIK surgery is for people who've had eye problems," he said. "I haven't had my eyes checked. I don't think me dropping passes has anything to do with my eyes."

Has anyone recommended getting them checked?

"I've never had an eye problem," he said. "Always had great vision. We've had eye tests and I can always see from afar, up close, with both eyes. So my eyesight is not a problem."

Injury report: Players who didn't practice Wednesday: fullback Charles Ali (rib), tight end Darnell Dinkins (high ankle), safety Sean Jones (ankle), nose tackle Shaun Rogers (shoulder), fullback Lawrence Vickers (high ankle) and defensive end Corey Williams (foot). Crennel said all should be available for Sunday's game except Dinkins, who is doubtful. Limited at practice: tight end Kellen Winslow (shoulder), defensive lineman Shaun Smith (calf) and running back Jerome Harrison (hamstring).

Reinforcements: The Browns signed free-agent tight end Jed Collins. They also signed linebacker Titus Brown from the practice squad to the active roster and waived receiver Steve Sanders.
