Browns lose Wright, could add Elam today
The Browns lost a player in free agency on Monday but were expected to add one today.

The player lost is running back Jason Wright, who signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Wright declined a Browns' contract offer and jumped to the NFC champions for $2 million over two years.

"It's a great opportunity for Jason," agent Mike McCartney said. "He leaves with tremendous feelings for the Browns."

The new player is safety Abram Elam, who would join the Browns if the New York Jets decline to match Cleveland's one-year offer sheet for $1.5 million.

The Jets have not tipped their hands on whether they will match. They view Elam as a good backup after signing Baltimore free-agent Jim Leonard. The Jets' other starter is Kerry Rhodes.

Elam, 27, was undrafted out of Kent State and appeared in 15 games as a rookie with Dallas in 2006. He was released and joined the Jets the following season. Elam started 17 games over the past two years for Browns coach Eric Mangini. He had two sacks and one interception - which he returned 92 yards for a touchdown - last season.

Elam would be the fifth free agent from the Jets signed since Mangini became Browns coach. The others are defensive lineman C.J. Mosley, cornerback Hank Poteat, and linebackers David Bowens and Eric Barton.

In other news Monday:

Browns players reported for the opening of Mangini's voluntary off-season conditioning program.

The Browns declined to say who was missing.

It's assumed receiver Dont? Stallworth remained in south Florida pending an investigation after police say he struck and killed a pedestrian while driving on a Miami Beach causeway Saturday morning.

A club spokesman would not say whether nose tackle Shaun Rogers reported. Rogers reportedly has requested a trade after he felt slighted by Mangini on two occasions in the off-season.

"The Browns will not go into specifics of which players work out daily," spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz wrote in an e-mail reply. "However, those who were expected to be here, were."

Monday marked the first time some players met Mangini and new General Manager George Kokinis. The new management team is conducting one-on-one meetings with the players this week, Bonsiewicz wrote.

The Browns visited with Bears free agent offensive lineman John St. Clair and gave him a physical.

The team's policy is to not confirm visits by free agents or draft-eligible players.
