Bullock tries to catch on in NFL

Bullock tries to catch on in NFL
Now it can be told: Cleveland State men's basketball senior J'Nathan Bullock did not measure up to his media guide 6-5 height on Friday.

With numerous NFL scouts, stop watches and charts in hand, looking on, Bullock registered at 6-3.6 inches on the height chart .

"He played bigger than that," said CSU coach Gary Waters, who was on hand with about 40 others as his graduating player went through a series of physical tests and Football drills during the on-campus workout.

Bullock, who played Football at Northern High in Flint, Mich., before settling on basketball with the Vikings, went through the various strength, speed and pass-catching drills in the covered dome at CSU's Krenzler Field. Mike Devlin, tight end coach for the New York Jets, directed most of the passing drills.

Devlin, like the rest of the scouts, said team policy did not allow him to comment. Zac Bocian, college area scout for the Browns, followed suit.

"For the most part I showed I could catch the ball and block," said Bullock, who caught approximately 60 passes of varying length. "I'm happy I didn't drop many [none according to one scout]. It's a blessing to have this many teams come out. There were some negatives."

Bullock's time of 4.80 seconds in the 40-yard run was not in the hoped-for 4.6-plus range.

"We've got to work on that," said Pat Adams, who has been working out Bullock at the Xpress Sports Center in Valley City. "Guys practice three months for this; we've been at it for two weeks.

"He showed concentration on the ball drills and had those soft hands. He answered all the questions, showing he knew Football. Someone is going to take a chance on him."

Representatives from Atlanta, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, Miami, Green Bay, St. Louis, Buffalo and Jacksonville attended.

Bullock said he is scheduled to have a private workout with the Browns next week. A source said the Bears and Rams also want another look.

"I'm still optimistic," said Bullock, who will graduate next month with a degree in mechanical engineering. "I really don't know what's next right now."

It's the waiting game.
