The Browns, in a precarious situation at wide receiver because they do not know whether Donte Stallworth will be available in 2009, have signed 35-year-old David Patten to a one-year contract for the NFL minimum.

Patten played with the Browns in 2000. He is a year older than Joe Jurevicius, whom the Browns released earlier this month. Patten is the 10th player signed by the Browns since free agency began Feb. 27.

Patten played with the Giants before signing with the Browns nine years ago. He was on two Super Bowl championship teams with the Patriots and also played with the Redskins and Saints. He has 324 career catches.

If they sign no additional wide receivers and do not draft one, Patten would start opposite Braylon Edwards - if Edwards is still on the roster.

Edwards has been linked to trade rumors with the Giants. Browns general manager George Kokinis said he spoke with Giants G.M. Jerry Reese at the Scouting Combine in February, but he said he is not shopping Edwards.

Stallworth's uncertainty centers around a traffic accident in which the car he was driving struck and killed a pedestrian in Miami Beach on the morning of March 14. The Browns honored a roster bonus of $4.875 million the day before the accident.

"We won't be releasing any information until the investigation is concluded," Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez said. "Due to the magnitude of the situation, we'll turn everything over to the state attorney before proceeding. We're treating this like a homicide that was done with a car."

Stallworth returned to Cleveland last Wednesday and has been working out at the Browns facility in the offseason conditioning program. He will have to turn himself in if a warrant for his arrest is issued.

"It's a tough situation," Browns quarterback Brady Quinn said. "Our prayers and thoughts are out to (Stallworth) and his family and also the man that was involved in the accident and his family."

Stallworth caught only 17 passes while playing in 11 games with the Browns in 2008. He missed five games with a quadriceps injury. Four of those were the first four games of the season. It is one reason the Browns started the season 1-3.
