Cleveland Browns Notes, Quotes 2008-08-25
--The Browns set a record for attendance at training camp this year. A total of 58,190 watched practice over a span of 24 days. Last year, 47,000 attended.

--Coach Romeo Crennel was seen on the sideline in Giants Stadium talking to Kellen Winslow after Winslow drew an offensive interference penalty. Some media reports said Crennel was chewing out his tight end.

"Because I talked to the guy, I'm (apparently) not happy with him," Crennel said a bit testily. "I'm happy with Winslow. I'm glad he's on my team. If I had about 10 more like him, I might have a better chance to win more games. I am not disappointed with him at all."

--Browns player-rep Darnell Dinkins was a staunch supporter of Gene Upshaw as Executive Director of the NFLPA. Upshaw died Aug. 21 from pancreatic cancer.

"Everybody is sad because he was such a great man and had such a great presence and voice for us as executive director," Dinkins said. "We're in the position we are with 60 percent of the revenues because of Gene. We have to come together as a union right now and press through this time.

"He was a person who was able to take his vision and put it into action. A lot of guys would have backed down. We as players have leverage, and leverage is power."

--After practice one day, Derek Anderson noticed a young fan standing alongside the rope separating spectators from the practice field. Anderson saw the boy was holding a marking pen and a pad of paper.

"What's up, buddy?" Anderson asked.

"Nothing," the boy said. "I'm just waiting for Brady Quinn."

--Pro golfer Ben Curtis, fresh off a second-place finish in the PGA, was a guest of the Browns at practice two days later.

Curtis was wearing an orange Browns polo shirt. While playing at Oakland Hills, a golf course near Detroit, he was wearing the blue and silver of the Detroit Lions. His contract with Reebok calls for him to wear the shirt of whatever pro football team is in the area of the course he is playing.

"This is my true feelings here," said Curtis, a native of Stow, Ohio, as he tugged on the sleeve of his shirt. "I have to wear a Steelers shirt when I'm in Pittsburgh. The hard part is dealing with the fans and hearing them say 'Go Steelers!' I always put on a Browns shirt or hat somewhere along the line to rub it in."

--Practice one day ended with a field-goal attempt by Phil Dawson. The field-goal team traditionally ends a session, but this kick was special. Romeo Crennel told the team the afternoon meeting the next day would be canceled if Dawson made the kick from 54 yards. If he missed, the entire team would have to run a lap.

Dawson's kick actually fell about a yard short, but Crennel called the kick good because the goal post was facing the opposite way. The players raised their arms in celebration.

--Injured guard Ryan Tucker has started working outside with trainer Marty Lauzon. Tucker had been out since May 14 with a fractured hip. Tucker is targeting the season opener for his return.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "When your starters get hurt, it gives the backups opportunities, but that means you're not working with your starters. Your team is probably not making the kind of progress that you want it to make or that you could make if you had everybody." -- Coach Romeo Crennel, on the numerous injuries affecting the Browns.
