Cleveland Browns Notes, Quotes 2009-03-27
--The Browns have signed 10 free agents, their highest total since the expansion year of 1999 when they signed 15 players in a year when the salary cap was not a problem.

--Coach Eric Mangini was not bluffing when he said the Browns would not make a big splash in free agency. Though they have signed 10 players, few if any are high impact players. They have played a combined 972 games with 405 starts.

--Mangini said he wants to invite Brett Favre to Browns training camp this summer, but not as a competing quarterback. Instead, Favre would be there to pass his wisdom on to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. It would also show Mangini did not blame Favre for the Jets collapse at the end of 2008, which ultimately led to Mangini being fired after three years on the job.

--As part of their draft preparation the Browns attended a private workout Wednesday for University of West Virginia quarterback Pat White. The Browns are not tipping their hand about how they would use White if they draft him. He could be used as a wide receiver and return specialist, similar to the way the Browns use Josh Cribbs now. White is projected as a second round pick.

The Browns are looking at Cribbs as a possible safety. If he is used extensively on defense his role as a return specialist would be reduced. Also, Cribbs is looking for a new contract, though he is signed through 2012.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I don't have a projected starter at this point. We'll have an open competition where they'll both get a chance to establish that they'll be the starter." - Coach Eric Mangini on an impending quarterback battle between Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.
