Cleveland Browns Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-03

Cleveland Browns Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-03
With all the Browns have to deal with, i.e. monitoring the Donte Stallworth situation, plotting draft strategy and getting everybody on board for the offseason program, renegotiating a contract for a player signed through 2012 seems like a low priority. But it might not be, considering the player is Joshua Cribbs.

In 2006 Cribbs signed a six-year, $6 million contract extension. He was in his second year at the time after making the team as an undrafted rookie from Kent State. It seemed like a fortune, but now he is convinced he should be paid more; he broke the franchise record for kick return yardage in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Cribbs quietly asked for a new contract last year. He did not get one, but he never talked about it again last season. He did not skip OTAs, minicamp or training camp.

Cribbs might not be as accommodating this spring if the Browns do not at least begin to renegotiate. It is a situation that bears watching in the weeks leading up to the June minicamp.

Brady Quinn's name has come up again in trade rumors with Denver now that the Broncos have announced they are willing to trade disgruntled Jay Cutler.

If the Browns do ultimately plan to trade Quinn or Derek Anderson to the Broncos, they are being very coy about it. Coach Eric Mangini said the two quarterbacks will compete for a starting job, starting with the beginning of OTAs next month. The value for Quinn or Anderson will increase if the Browns play hard to get.

Since the Browns do not appear contenders for the AFC North in 2009, they would want to stockpile draft picks. The Lions could get involved in a three-way trade Quinn going to Denver, Cutler to Detroit and Lions draft picks to the Browns.

1. Outside linebacker: Improving an anemic pass rush has to be a priority after getting just 17 sacks last season. Coach Eric Mangini says better coverage in the secondary and more discipline in schemes can boost a sack total without a major overhaul in personnel, but the Browns need a starting left outside linebacker because they released Antwan Peek and Willie McGinest, a free agent, is likely to retire.

2. Safety: The Browns did not sign in free agency. They did re-sign Mike Adams, but he is better in a support role than as a starter for 16 games. As badly as they need an outside linebacker, it would not be a total shock if they use the fifth pick in the draft on cornerback/safety Malcolm Jenkins from Ohio State.

3. Running back: Wide receiver was a priority until the Browns signed 35-year-old David Patten. They still might take one on the second day of the draft. The same holds true for running back as they look to groom a replacement for Jamal Lewis. Backup Jerome Harrison, entering his fourth year, is not a 200 carries a season back. Like every team they would like to find a Terrell Davis in the sixth round.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

--CB Daven Holly is worth re-signing if the price is right. He is coming off major knee surgery and doesn't have much bargaining leverage.
