PLAYER NOTES

--WR Syndric Steptoe has five receptions for 34 yards this season. His numbers prove he is not a credible threat as a starting wide receiver, and his presence is killing the offense.

--LG Eric Steinbach missed the game with a rotator cuff injury that might sideline him for some time. Steinbach is a strong presence inside the line, and in his absence Seth McKinney started and committed two false starts.

--RB Jerome Harrison might be earning more playing time with his runs after catches. Harrison took a swing pass and scored from 19 yards, giving him two nice runs after catches in two weeks. Look for Harrison to get more playing time in passing situations.

--LB Kamerion Wimbley has gone three games without a sack. Wimbley was drafted to be a pass rusher. There is time left to have a good season, but the Browns needed more from him in these big games.

--LB Willie McGinest missed the Ravens game with a hamstring injury. His absence was felt. McGinest is strong against the run, and the Ravens love to run the ball. Alex Hall filled in and had a sack, but he cannot hold up physically the way McGinest does.

REPORT CARD VS. RAVENS

PASSING OFFENSE: F - Derek Anderson is having big problems. His 22.9 quarterback rating sums things up, but so does going 14-for-37 and passing for just 125 yards. Braylon Edwards is not helping Anderson, and the Browns front office did not help him by not getting a second receiver once Donte' Stallworth was injured. Anderson appears to have lost confidence, and readily admitted he's battling to keep his job.

RUSHING OFFENSE: C - Jamal Lewis lamented not getting the ball more, and he did average 4.7 yards on his 12 carries. But the Browns simply did not have the ball enough to sustain and maintain a running game. The offense is too inconsistent, but it can rely on Lewis to contribute - and the contributions will mean something if the offense gains any continuity and consistency.

PASS DEFENSE: C - The Browns secondary is simply not very good. Joe Flacco threw almost nothing but safe, short, quick passes, and he was able to complete 13-of-19. If the Browns can't rattle a rookie quarterback, they have problems. And they did not rattle or scare this rookie quarterback at all.

RUSH DEFENSE: F - The Browns spent a lot of energy in the offseason trying to shore up the run defense. Well, Baltimore ran for 151 yards and held the ball more than 13 minutes in the final quarter. Thirteen minutes. The Browns are giving up 145 yards per game rushing. And that's pretty bad.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C - Josh Cribbs' ankle injury has slowed the Browns' return game, and that has taken away one of the team's great weapons from a year ago. Cribbs has not had a big return this season, and it has hurt the offense. He was an energizing player a year ago. Dave Zastudil has punted well, but one poor punt Sunday set up a Baltimore touchdown.

COACHING: D - There were no decisions that jumped out and screamed "bad choice" like in previous games, but the Browns went from playing fairly well in one half to making silly mistakes in the second. The coaching staff is taking a lot of heat for the 0-3 start, but the front office deserves some of the blame as well for voiding the coaching staff of a legitimate secondary and for not getting enough receiving depth. The Browns have talent, but not enough to win no matter who is coaching.
