Cleveland Browns Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-23
With Kellen Winslow Jr. suspended one game by the Browns because of conduct detrimental after mouthing off about his staph infection, the role of starting tight end goes to Steve Heiden. Heiden missed practice Wednesday with a pectoral injury but expects to be ready to play against the Jaguars.

Heiden started against the Giants when Winslow had to miss the game with his illness. Heiden caught five passes after catching one in his first four games. Winslow returned to play against the Redskins and Heiden was reduced to being a blocker again. He caught one pass.

PLAYER NOTES

--DL Shaun Smith has been declared out for the Jacksonville game because his broken left hand has not healed.

--LB Shantee Orr missed practice Wednesday with a foot injury and might not be cleared for Sunday.

--DB Mike Adams missed practice with a hamstring injury. He was deactivated against the Redskins because of the injury.

--RT Ryan Tucker missed practice again because of his sore knee.

--DE Corey Williams was held from practice because of a shoulder injury. Williams was hurt in the Redskins game and later returned.

--Rookie TE Martin Rucker is close to being ready to play. He had arthroscopic knee surgery on Aug. 13 and did not start practicing until Oct. 6.

GAME PLAN: The Browns have to be successful on offense early, otherwise they have difficulty getting untracked. Their 2-4 record is partly reflected in the fact they have yet to score a touchdown in the first quarter. They have two field goals compared to scoring 31 points in the second quarter.

The Jaguars, conversely, have not been a good first half team defensively. They have allowed 34 points in the first quarter and 37 in the second. Browns quarterback Derek Anderson said even a short pass for a five-yard gain in the first series gets the Browns going.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Browns RT Kevin Shaffer vs. Jaguars DE Paul Spicer: Spicer has only 1/2 sack, but he has 16 quarterback pressures. Shaffer has to keep Spicer out of Derek Anderson's facemask for the Browns offense to work smoothly.

Browns NT Shaun Rogers vs. Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew: Jones-Drew is Jacksonville's touchdown machine. The Jaguars have scored 11 offensive touchdowns and Jones-Drew has six - five rushing and one receiving. Rogers can make it difficult for Jones-Drew to score from short-yardage.

INJURY IMPACT: Kellen Winslow is not injured, but being suspended amounts to the same thing; he will not play against the Jaguars. It means Steve Heiden will be more of a receiver than a blocker. The Browns will miss his blocking as they try to keep pressure off Derek Anderson. ... The Browns will miss Mike Adams if his hamstring injury keeps him out again. Adams can play the nickel back if he is healthy.
