A situation that isn't ugly yet but has the potential to become nasty involves return specialist Joshua Cribbs. Cribbs wants a new contract. His problem is he signed a six-year extension in 2006. The total value of his deal, which runs through 2012, is under $6 million.

"I regret a lot of things, but not playing for the Cleveland Browns," Cribbs said. "I love playing here. Anything that goes on off the field, I'm sure my agent will handle. The Browns will put me in a better situation so we can win football games. I have all loyalty to the football team and this organization. I'm sure they'll show me the same loyalty in return. Something will happen. If it doesn't, I'll be a star here playing football for the Browns."

Cribbs fired Andre Colona, the agent that negotiated the six-year deal. Cribbs' new agent, J.R. Rickert, said his client is grossly underpaid for the level of performance he puts on the field." Cribbs made the Pro Bowl last year and led the NFL in kick returns. He was third in punt returns and he led the Browns with 23 special teams tackles.

--The Browns signed Ss Brandon Mitchell and Travis Key three days after giving up touchdown passes of 71 and 70 yards to the Jets. Key is an undrafted rookie. Mitchell spent 2007 on the Texans practice squad.

--Mike Adams has replaced Terry Cousin as the nickel back. Adams is quicker than Cousin.

"I'm an athlete just like the opposing wide receivers are athletes," Adams said. "I make it work."

Cousin, who played the last three seasons with the Jaguars, was out of work for about three months before signing with the Browns on May 23. The signing followed the season-ending knee injury to Daven Holly.

--DL Corey Williams is back to practice after missing about a week with a shoulder injury. When the Browns are in a four-man line, Williams and Shaun Rogers are the tackles and Kamerion Wimbley and Willie McGinest line up outside. Williams was on the field for two snaps in the preseason opener. The starting defense was involved in only 10 plays.

--TE Darnell Dinkins has been a busy man this training camp. Starter Kellen Winslow rested a sore hamstring for 10 days and Steve Heiden missed eight days with a knee injury. Neither Winslow nor Heiden played against the Jets in the preseason opener.

"Dinkins is kind of the all-around guy and probably a little bit better blocker (than rookie Martin Rucker) right now overall," coach Romeo Crennel said. "Rucker is learning to become a blocker. (At Missouri) they split him out and flexed him out quite a bit. He has to understand how to take on some of those big guys down in the trenches. He's shown that he's willing to do that."

--NT Shaun Rogers made a quick, positive impression on fans in the preseason opener. He stopped the Jets' Thomas Jones after a 3-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage.

--QB Ken Dorsey threw 11 straight incompletions over two possessions in the final 2:42 of a 24-20 loss to the Jets. Three New York penalties resulting in first downs bailed him out, but he could not finish off the final drive.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Second-year DEs Chase Pittman and Melila Purcell along with undrafted rookie Brian Schaefering in a battle for two backup DE spots -- Pittman and Purcell look more comfortable in their second season, but Schaefering is showing a willingness to mix it up with offensive tackles. Schaefering had three tackles against the Jets.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Kevin Kasper is losing ground in his battle for the third receiver spot because he cannot stay healthy. He pulled a hamstring early in training camp and tweaked it one day after returning. His main competition, Travis Wilson, caught three passes for 58 yards against the Jets. ... Louis Leonard is fighting sixth-round draft choice Ahtyba Rubin for a backup nose tackle job. Leonard led the Browns in the preseason opener with four tackles.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Braylon Edwards -- Edwards is looking like the receiver that caught 16 touchdown passes last year. One day he dropped two short passes and then followed that by catching two touchdown passes from Derek Anderson longer than 50 yards. He caught a touchdown pass against the Jets. Edwards suffered a setback in practice two days later when teammate Donte Stallworth stepped on his heel during wind sprints. Stitches were required to close the wound.

ROOKIE REPORT: Arthroscopic surgery was performed to remove cartilage from behind the right knee of fourth-round rookie Beau Bell Aug. 7. Bell will miss four-to-six weeks. ... Fourth-round TE Martin Rucker caught five passes for 70 yards in the preseason opener, but he also was on the punt cover team that allowed Nick Lowery to return a punt 62 yards for the game-winning touchdown. ... Sixth-round NT Ahtyba Rubin is a project and could be destined for the practice squad. ... Sixth-round pick Paul Hubbard is demonstrating he has sure hands. He is in line to be the fourth receiver until Joe Jurevicius returns from knee surgery in late October. ... The Browns believe they found a gem in seventh-round LB Alex Hall. The coaches like the way he bends and accelerates to the quarterback.

INJURY REPORT: LB Antwan Peek (knee) will miss at least three more weeks.

LB Beau Bell (knee) is out four-to-six weeks.

RG Ryan Tucker (hip) and WR Joe Jurevicius (knee) are on PUP.

WR Kevin Kasper is day-to-day with a hamstring injury.
