Cleveland Browns Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-14
Veteran wide receiver Joe Jurevicius was released by the Browns on March 11, three years to the day after he was signed. Jurevicius was under contract for $2.4 million in 2009. He missed all of 2008 because of complications from staph infection. In all he had seven operations on his right knee.

The Browns wanted Jurevicius to play at a reduced salary. Jurevicius was open to a change and said he was ready to take a "steep" reduction, but the amount was not agreed upon.

"As a Cleveland native and lifelong Browns fan, I always hoped to finish my career in brown and orange with my family and friends in the stands," Jurevicius said. "(I) was even willing to take a steep pay cut to keep my dream alive, which is why I have such a heavy heart today."

The Browns are now without two of their top receivers from the 2007 season in which they finished 10-6. Kellen Winslow Jr., traded to Tampa Bay on Feb. 27, caught 82 passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns, Braylon Edwards caught 80 passes for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns and Jurevicius caught 50 passes for 614 yards and three touchdowns.

The Browns have signed three free agents and re-signed safety Mike Adams, but so far the players they have added, particularly on defense, have been backups most of their careers.

Sean Jones, the starting safety when healthy since 2005, signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia. Adams started four games in place of Jones last season while Jones mended from arthroscopic knee surgery. The previous coaching staff, at least, believed Jones was better because as soon as Jones recovered Adams was back in his substitute role.

1. Outside linebacker: The defense can get better in a hurry if the Browns get pressure on the quarterback. They are looking for a starter on the left side to replace Willie McGinest. Last season the Browns had 17 sacks, second fewest in the league.

2. Inside linebacker: Leon Williams is on the roster, but he could not beat out Andra Davis, who signed with the Broncos in free agency. The Browns have been weak in run defense since returning to the NFL in 1999. They need a complement to inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and might have to wait for the draft to fill it. Last season they allowed 16 rushing touchdowns - twice as many as the year before.

3. Safety: Re-signing Mike Adams gives the Browns depth, but they still need to find a starter. They did not make a big effort to retain Sean Jones, and now they have to find a replacement for his four interceptions and 92 tackles.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

--TE Darnell Dinkins might be re-signed as a backup because Steve Heiden is recovering from major knee surgery and Martin Rucker is unproven.

--OL Lennie Friedman missed all of 2008 with a shoulder injury, lost weight during his recovery and is unlikely to be re-signed.

--LB Kris Griffin has a long injury history and won't be back.

--CB Daven Holly is worth re-signing if the price is right. He is coming off major knee surgery and doesn't have much bargaining leverage.

--LB Willie McGinest is expected to retire.

--OL Seth McKinney is valuable as a backup but will not be re-signed unless the Browns get him for a bargain.

--LB Shantee Orr made four tackles from scrimmage and six on special teams. He will not be back.
