Cleveland Browns Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-20
Early on the morning of March 14, Donte Stallworth was driving on McArthur Causeway in Miami Beach when his car struck and killed 59-year-old pedestrian Mario Reyes, who was crossing the causeway to wait for a bus to take him home.

When police arrived, blood was drawn from Stallworth to check for alcohol or drugs in his system, a procedure mandated by law in Florida. Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez said it might take as long as three weeks for testing to conclude.

On the day before the accident, the Browns paid Stallworth a $4.875 million bonus negotiated when Stallworth signed a seven-year, $35 million contract last year. The Browns are concerned about the victim and his family, but they also have to be anxious to learn what if anything will happen to Stallworth. They are counting on him to start opposite Braylon Edwards in 2009. The Browns are not commenting on the incident, other than to issue the standard statement that they are aware of the seriousness of the situation.

If potential legal troubles do prevent Stallworth from playing in 2009 the Browns might be able to recoup the roster bonus, but the money would still count against the salary cap.

The Jets matched an offer the Browns made last week to safety Abram Elam, a restricted free agent at the start of free agency, which means Coach Eric Mangini is still looking for a starting strong safety.

The Browns signed Elam to a one-year offer sheet of $1.5 million. The Jets last month retained the right to match any offer made Elam by offering him a contract worth just over $1 million. Tuesday was the final day the Jets could match the offer, and that was when they matched.

At the very least, Elam would have been part of a rotation with Brodney Pool and Mike Adams. Elam also is regarded as a versatile special teams player.

Sean Jones, the Browns starting strong safety from 2005-08 when healthy, signed a free agent contract with the Eagles.

1. Outside linebacker: Eight players have been signed by the Browns in free agency, but none addresses the need of an increased pass rush from the left outside linebacker. The Browns have been looking for that player since drafting right outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley in 2006.

2. Safety: The Browns did not think enough of Sean Jones to sign him to an extension before free agency began and now they have to find another starter. They re-signed Mike Adams to a three-year contract, but he is better as part of a rotation than a starter for 16 games.

3. Wide receiver: Even if Donte Stallworth escapes legal trouble for killing a pedestrian while driving, the Browns have to beef up their receiving corps. It is very thin behind Braylon Edwards. Stallworth caught only 17 passes while playing in 11 games last season.
