Long title drought to end this year?
Football PLAYOFFS INSIDER

Does the drought stop here?

It will be up to Aurora and St. Ignatius on Saturday during the 37th annual state Football championships in Canton's Fawcett Stadium. Cleveland-area schools have gone three seasons without winning a state championship, the longest drought for the area in the 36 years the tournament has been conducted.

The last area school to win a state title was Benedictine, which won the second of back-to-back Division III championships in 2004 by defeating St. Marys Memorial, 27-14.

The last area public school to win a title is Avon Lake, which won the Division II championship in 2003.

Bummer: Aurora juniors Tim Gardner and Conor Heraghty will not be able to play against Columbus Eastmoor Academy after suffering season-ending injuries in last week's 20-14 victory over Sunbury Big Walnut. Gardner, a tight end, suffered a broken right ankle after he was tackled near the goal line after making one of the game's biggest plays, a 37-yard reception that set up Aurora's first touchdown. Heraghty, a running back/linebacker, suffered a broken right arm.

"I can't tell you how badly I feel for those guys, especially Tim," said quarterback Brendan Gallagher. "I underthrew him on that play and he had to wait for the ball. If I would have led him he would have scored and probably wouldn't have been tackled."

What's a Greenman?

John Kudley, a former social studies teacher at Aurora, city councilman and soon-to-be-author of a book on the history of the city, tells this story:

"At one time, Aurora's teams were known as the Irish. During the late 1940s, Aurora had a number of residents who were involved with the Cleveland Browns organization when the Browns trained in Hiram. Aurora was given permission to use the original 'Brownie' logo. As Aurora's colors were green, we became known as the Greenies. A number of people didn't like that so in the late 1950s or early 1960s the teams became known as the Greenmen and we used the 'Brownie' logo until 1973. Mark Campana, a senior student-athlete that year, redesigned the logo to its more masculine version that we use today."
