Browns receiver Dont? Stallworth on Wednesday issued his first public comments since a car he was driving reportedly struck and killed a pedestrian on a Miami Beach causeway last Saturday.
Through the Browns, Stallworth said: "My family and I are grief-stricken over the tragic accident which occurred Saturday on Miami Beach where Mario Reyes sadly lost his life. My thoughts and prayers are with the Reyes family during this incredibly difficult time. Unfortunately, since this accident is still under police investigation, I cannot comment further on the matter at this time."
Miami Beach authorities are waiting for toxicology tests on Stallworth's blood before deciding whether to press charges. Results of the tests are expected Friday.
Meanwhile, Greg Aiello of the NFL office said Wednesday that it is "premature" to say if Stallworth would be considered in violation of the league's conduct policy whether or not criminal charges are filed.
"We're just continuing to monitor it," Aiello said.
