Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell will participate in the Browns' rookie minicamp this weekend, but has yet to sign a free-agent contract. If all goes well, he hopes to be a Brown by the end of the weekend.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to come up there and compete," Harrell said by phone. "My agents said this would be a good opportunity to try to catch on with a team and I'm really looking forward to it."

Harrell put up gaudy numbers at Texas Tech but some believe his stats were a product of the Red Raiders' spread offense. Harrell hopes to disprove that this weekend.

"Hopefully they'll give me a shot to see if it was the system or if I have what it takes to play at the next level," said Harrell, whose No. 1 target at Tech was receiver Michael Crabtree, the 49ers' first-round pick (10th overall). "I'd love to sign a free-agent contract with the Browns and begin my NFL career there."

If Harrell does sign, he would join quarterbacks Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, and Brett Ratliff, who was acquired Saturday in a trade with the Jets.

"Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn are great quarterbacks and I hope to get the chance to come in there and learn from them," Harrell said. "I know the Browns have a great history and great fans and I think it would be a good fit."

Harrell, who struggled at the Senior Bowl, is one of about 10-12 undrafted free agents the Browns will bring in this weekend along with their draft picks. They've already signed Utah receiver Brent Casteel, according to the Salt Lake Tribune, and Albany punter Chris Lynch, according to the Albany, N.Y., Times Union.

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, who blamed Browns coach Eric Mangini for reports that Crabtree behaved like a diva on his visit to Cleveland, told the Dallas Morning News that Harrell was the best quarterback in the draft.

"The truth of the matter is that the NFL drafts quarterbacks notoriously bad," Leach said. "That's indisputable.

"I don't have an answer for why they don't have a skill for drafting a quarterback. Well, I think the priorities are out of order. Accurate and makes good decisions need to be a priority, not something they need to teach him, because they don't do that very well."

Harrell led Texas Tech to a top 10 ranking in 2008, completing 70.6 percent of his throws and passing for 5,111 yards.
