WHAT A DEAL

WHAT A DEAL
1. Indians acquire OF Tris Speaker from the Boston Red Sox for P Sam Jones, IF Fred Thomas and $55,000, April 8, 1916. All-time great CF Speaker hit .354 in 11 Indians seasons and managed them to 1920 World Series title.

2. Indians acquire SS Omar Vizquel from the Seattle Mariners for SS Felix Fermin and 1B Reggie Jefferson, Dec. 20, 1993. Vizquel's 11 seasons here paid off in eight Gold Gloves and Hall of Fame consideration.

3. Cavaliers acquire first overall pick in draft - and select C Brad Daugherty - from the Philadelphia 76ers for F Roy Hinson and $800,000, June 17, 1986. Eastern Conference coaches named Daugherty to All-Star team in five of his six full seasons.

4. Indians acquire OF Kenny Lofton and IF Dave Rohde from the Houston Astros for P Willie Blair and C Eddie Taubensee, Dec. 10, 1991. In first of three Cleveland stints, Lofton emerged as one of Cleveland's best offensive players ever.

5. Indians acquire OF Charlie Jamieson, 3B Larry Gardner and P Elmer Myers from the Philadelphia Athletics for OF Braggo Roth, March 1, 1919. Jamieson had 12 great Cleveland seasons, batting .316, and Gardner had four big Indians years.

6. Cavaliers acquire G Mark Price, shortly after he's taken as the 25th pick of the draft, from the Dallas Mavericks for a 1989 second-round pick (became Jeff Hodge), June 17, 1986. Shooting and playmaking star Price became first-team All-NBA.

7. Indians acquire rights to OF Shoeless Joe Jackson and IF Morris Rath from the Philadelphia Athletics for OF Bris Lord, July 30, 1910. Jackson established himself as one of baseball's best hitters ever, batting .375 before getting traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1915.

8. Browns acquire QB Frank Ryan and RB Tom Wilson from the Los Angeles Rams for 1963 third- and sixth-round draft picks, 1962. Ryan led the 1964 title team and the 1965 NFL runner-up.

9. Indians acquire Early Wynn and Mickey Vernon from the Washington Senators for P Joe Haynes, P Eddie Klieman and 1B Eddie Robinson, Dec. 14, 1948. Wynn had a 163-100 record the next nine seasons.

10. Indians acquire OF Grady Sizemore, P Cliff Lee, 2B Brandon Phillips and 1B Lee Stevens from the Montreal Expos for P Bartolo Colon, P Tim Drew and cash, June 27, 2002. Indians hope to reap benefits for years to come.

City's 10 Worst Trades

1. Browns trade DE Willie Davis to the Green Bay Packers for DE A.D. Williams, 1960. Hall of Famer Davis was the defensive leader of Green Bay's famous dynasty. Williams played one year as a Browns backup.

2. Indians trade OF Rocky Colavito to the Detroit Tigers for OF Harvey Kuenn, April 17, 1960. Maybe the most popular Indians player ever, the franchise went into a tailspin after Colavito left.

3. Cavaliers trade 1982 first-round draft choice (became overall No. 1 pick, F James Worthy) and G Butch Lee to the Los Angeles Lakers for F Don Ford and Lakers' 1980 first-round pick (became G Chad Kinch), Feb. 15, 1980. Everyone but the Cavs knew this was trading a premium pick for a lousy one.

4. Browns trade DL Henry Jordan to the Green Bay Packers for a fifth-round pick (became FB Bob Jarus), 1959. Hall of Famer Jordan became a perfect complement to Willie Davis.

5. Browns trade DE Doug Atkins and QB Ken Gorgal to the Chicago Bears for third- (became E Larry Ross) and sixth- (became T Sherman Plunkett) round picks, 1956. Atkins was yet another youngster developing into a Hall of Famer dealt by Paul Brown.

6. Indians trade 1B Norm Cash to the Detroit Tigers for 3B Steve Demeter, April 12, 1960. Cash slugged 373 more homers; Demeter had five more at-bats.

7. Cavaliers trade 1983 (became star G Derek Harper) and 1986 (became star F, but troubled, Roy Tarpley) first-round draft picks and F Bill Robinzine to the Dallas Mavericks for F Richard Washington and F Jerome Whitehead, Oct. 30, 1980. One of bizarre trades during Ted Stepien's ownership, prompting the NBA to impose a trade moratorium on the Cavs.

8. Browns trade WR Paul Warfield to the Miami Dolphins for the first pick in the draft, used to pick QB Mike Phipps, 1970. Warfield continued his Hall of Fame excellence while Phipps was doomed by aging team around him.

9. Indians trade 2B Jeff Kent, P Julian Tavarez and IF Jose Vizcaino to the San Francisco Giants for 3B Matt Williams, Nov. 13, 1996. Kent had eight 100-RBI seasons, Tavarez is still going and Williams was in Cleveland for one All-Star season.

10. Indians trade OF Shoeless Joe Jackson to the Chicago White Sox for OF Braggo Roth, OF Larry Chappell, P Ed Klepfer and cash, Aug. 20, 1915. No "Black Sox" scandal for Jackson if not for this deal.
